![]() ![]() Choosing to embargo oil means cutting off oil exports to even your allies, and (b) this actually doesn't work at all, because a nation with Free Trade can't effectively embargo. The US can issue an embargo on oil, but (a) to the extent that an oil embargo is effective, it applies to every single one of your trading partners. This was the direct cause of Pearl Harbor. Let's take the historical US oil embargo on Japan, for example. Where the busywork should be is in influencing what and who your citizens are allowed to trade with. And it's something that a business should be doing itself. That's the extent of the strategic depth, which is to say, zero. It creates a tremendous amount of busywork with no strategic value you see a business needs steel it doesn't have to function, you import steel, because obviously. Not only is this completely ahistorical, it's not fun. The devs have gone on record stating that they have no intention to allow you any control over your foreign trade policies beyond the ridiculously simplistic and unrealistic embargo system, and instead of your businesses automatically importing the goods they need as they would in real life, it is left to the government to manage the importing of every single good in the country. But Victoria 3 has this completely backwards. What they don't control is every specific import into their country. Historically, governments (at least attempt to) control who their citizens can trade with. I expect all of the broken things to be fixed, but the subject of this post isn't a "broken thing" - it's a fundamentally poor approach to the game's design, but which is working as intended and is part of the core gameplay loop that won't be changed. The leaked build only confirms the problem, but this post is not based on judging a broken build. ![]() First, let me preface this by saying: this is based on what we already knew from dev diaries.
